Remembering ’06: Mathews vs. Foster Jnr.

On top of the world…again?

AS Derry Mathews prepares to once again conquer the boxing world on January 20, it is hard not to reminisce over that life changing night against Stephen Foster Jnr. almost six years ago.

It was 2006 and English champion, Mathews (16-0-0), was completing his final preparations with George Vaughan at the Litherland Bridge Road gym. The 23-year-old was in prime condition and prophetically vowed to give Foster Jnr. (21-0-1) a “boxing lesson” when he challenged the Mancunian for his WBU featherweight title.

By fight night at the M.E.N Arena on October 14, the ‘Golden Boy’ was not favoured for victory by many pundits heading in to the squared circle. Despite the lack of faith, following his prestigious amateur career and a solid start in the paid ranks, the Vaughan starlet was not about to let this chance elude him.
