Derry vs Crolla
Derry Mathews pulled off a major upset as he ripped the British lightweight title from Anthony Crolla with a sixth-round stoppage win.
The Liverpool fighter floored Crolla in the third round and referee John Keane stepped in when Mathews badly hurt his man with another brutal barrage.
Crolla’s crisp jab kept Mathews on the back foot in the opener and the Mancunian continued to land his accurate left hand in the second.
But Ma...

By Sean Pollock (@SeanPollo)
IT HAS been almost seven years since Liverpool’s Derry Mathews (29(15)-6-1) first fought in the same ring as Stephen Foster Jnr. Between the ropes of the M.E.N Arena on Oct. 14 2006, ‘Dirty’ Derry adeptly demonstrated the sweet science of boxing and clinched a career defining win. Although this time, the 28-year-old will not be battling Foster Jnr in a rematch. Instead, Mathews will trade leather with current British lightweight title holder, Anthony Crolla (23(9)-2-0), at Oldham Sports centre, whilst his old foe features on the bill’s undercard.
Crolla is hoping to mak...
FOR Derry Mathews, Emiliano Marsili was no designer Italian.
The 35-year-old from Lazio ruined all best laid plans at the Olympia last night by halting the Liverpool fighter in the seventh round of their IBO lightweight world title fight.
Questions marks hung over Marsili’s ability to box away from the comforts of his homeland for the first time but his response was thoroughly convincing.
Mathews left the ring bloodied, bruised and looking like he was nursing a new broken nose, an injury which certainly had a bearing on his defeat.
But i...

AS Derry Mathews prepares to once again conquer the boxing world on January 20, it is hard not to reminisce over that life changing night against Stephen Foster Jnr. almost six years ago.

Mathews WBU king
By fight night at the M.E.N Arena on October 14, the ‘Golden Boy’ was not favoured for victory by many pundits heading in to the squared circle. Despite the lack of faith, following his prestigious amateur career and a solid start in the paid ranks, the Vaughan starlet was not about to let this chance elude him.

Derry Mathews vs. Emiliano Marsili
Vacant IBO Lightweight Title
Liverpool, UK— BECOMING a two weight world champion is a feat that eludes many fighters. Derry Mathews, 28, can achieve just that when he enters the ring in his native Liverpool next month to challenge for the vacant IBO lightweight strap.
It was 2006 when Mathews first secured a globally recognised title, beating Stephen Foster- 21-0-1 at the time- to claim the WBU featherweight title.
The Liverpudlian took a brief sabbatical from the sport following a string of defeats in 2009, but has since rejuvenated his career and finds himself once again near the pinnacle of the British boxing scene.
But who is the man Mathews must overcome to continue his quest for lightweight glory?
